ADA Rotterdam - Area for Debate and Art

A project organised by Esmé Valk

Zicht op Zalmhaven, meaning “Salmon Harbour View”, is a single-table restaurant to which guests are invited for a three course meal and an interdisciplinary conversation. The invitees are working in the fields of art, philosophy, social science, cultural theory and history.

The dinner table is set in an intimate, confined space. Close by is a mobile kitchen where the meals are prepared. During the dinner no audience is present. Afterwards, the content of the conversation is made public in the form of a PDF transcript. The transcripts can be downloaded from: zichtopzalmhaven.esmevalk.com

The restaurant has started by hosting three evenings on the subjects: Freedoms and Choices, Reading the City and Changing Courses and plans to continue with seven more. These are subjects that have come forth from questions the artist and organiser Esmé Valk deals with in her own artistic practice. As such, the project Zicht op Zalmhaven can be seen as an alternative form of doing research, one that finds its foundation in sharing and in the belief that conversation creates a space where new ideas can emerge through the exchanging of thoughts and the unexpected reply of the other. Zicht op Zalmhaven aims to create new perspectives on a given subject that are shared between the guests, the organiser and the readers.
